Introduction
The Dental Training School is an emerging training centre of Excellency in oral health sciences in Africa. Approved by the Health Professions Council of Zambia and affiliated to the University of Zambia, the Dental Training School is committed to turning out highly skilled and competent graduates in Dental Therapy, Dental Technology and Dental Chair side assisting programmes. The graduates are equipped with knowledge and skills to meet the demands of the workplace and the special needs of changing environments and to efficiently offer quality oral health services.
Strategically and centrally located on plot number 4579 Wamulwa road off Great East Road in Thorn park area, the Dental Training School is easy to access. The school was opened in 1969 and over the years has produced over five hundred graduates. The school has highly qualified academic and support staff. Student’s Affairs and wellbeing are competently cared for by the Students Affairs Office (SAO).
Vision
To train oral health personnel who will be able to provide quality oral health services at all levels of care.
Mission Statement
To provide quality oral health education, producing graduates with adequate knowledge, skills and attitudes to deliver quality oral health care in both clinical and community settings in Zambia and capable of continuing education in priority areas of oral health needs.
Minimum Admission Requirements
A Dental Therapy and Dental Technology programmes
Five ‘O’ level passes with credits in the following subjects:
1.English
2.Mathematics
3.Biology/Agriculture science
4.Science (Physics and Chemistry)
5.Any other subject
The interviews consist of an oral and written aptitude test
B.Dental Chair side Assisting Programme
Full grade twelve certificates with credits in the following subjects:
1.English
2.Mathematics
3.Science
Two passes in any other subjects.
Training Period
Three (3) years for Dental Therapy and Dental Technology programmes
One (1) year for Dental Chair side assisting programme
All programmes include a three months practical attachment at approved sites.
Intake
Intake of students is conducted every year except for the Dental Technology programme which is done after every three years. In all courses, gender balance is strictly adhered to during recruitment of students.

Diploma in Dental Sciences for Dental Therapy programme
Diploma in Dental Technology for Dental Technology Prrogramme
Certificate in Dental Chair side assisting for Dental Chair side assisting programme
Brief Job Description
1.Dental Therapist
Works in the dental surgery and in the community. In the surgery, the dental therapist does the following function:
•Diagnosis
•Prophylaxis
•Fillings
•Exodontia
•Pain relief
In the community, the dental therapist screens the community, gives oral health education, conducts surveys, collects and analizes data
2.Dental Technologist
Works in the dental laboratory and produces dental prostheses which include:
•Dentures,
•Crowns /bridges
•Orthodontic braces
3.Dental Attendant
Forms part of the dental team and assists the practioner in both the surgery and the dental laboratory. Major functions include:
•Reception of the patient
•House keeping
•Handling instruments and materials
•Infection prevention
•Taking and processing x-rays
•Giving oral hygiene instructions.

Diplomas and Certificates are underwritten by the University of Zambia

5.Students are also expected to purchase training kits and protective clothing
Tuition and Boarding fees vary depending on whether the student is Government or self sponsored.
Recreation Activities
The Dental Training School is affiliated to the Zambia Higher Institutions Sports Association (ZHISA) and it provides recreation activities in the following disciplines:

4.Table tennis
5.Volleyball
Library
The school has a well stocked library to support all the courses undertaken by the Dental Training School
Supporting Departments
Supporting departments include; accounts, procurement, stores and food/beverage
Service Delivery
The Dental Training School offers oral health services and is a referral centre from other clinics. Oral health services offered include: oral surgery, restorative, orthodontics, periodontology, prosthetics, paedodontics, oral radiology and emergency care.
