BACKGROUND:

The Makeni Islamic Society was established in June, 1972 in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. The institution is located on approximately 30 hectares of land on which it houses a fully integrated Islamic Complex with Masjid Al Dawaah Al Islamia (Islamic propagation Mosque) being the core of the institution. 

 The institution also houses the primary and secondary education departments. The Primary Education Department was established in 1979 while the Secondary Education Department opened in 1987 with a Grade Eight class. Then in 1993 the first Grade Ten class was introduced with the following objectives: “To develop the individual that is morally upright with quality education based on the Quran and Sunnah”.

At primary school, pupils write a government examination in Grade Seven. When they reach Grade Nine they also write another government examination to proceed to Grade Ten which is senior secondary. At Grade Twelve, pupils sit for school certificate examinations of the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ). Successful candidates proceed for tertiary education in various institutions.

1.0 MAKENI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

1.1 Makeni College of Education was founded in 1996 to offer a two year Zambia 

Teacher Education Course (ZBEC). The following were it aims:

  • To train youths to man schools throughout Zambia with a bias to Islamic Education
  • Empower youths with relevant skills, knowledge, values and attitudes for national development. 
  • To complement the efforts of government in the training of teachers in order to supplement the shortfall of teachers in in the profession.
  • Offer Islamic studies to expose the educated Zambians to teachings of Islam. 

1.2. The ZBEC programme was under the auspices of the Ministry of Education.  Graduating students were awarded the Zambia Basic Teacher Education Certificate (ZBEC). The ZBEC Course was later transformed into Zambia Teacher Education Certificate (ZATEC). The college has trained more than 300 teachers.

1.3 Following the government’s move to upgrade the qualifications of teachers by  phasing out the certificate course (ZATEC), Makeni College of Education began offering the Secondary Teachers Diploma in 2008 which is underwritten by the University of Zambia. This is a three year diploma course which is acknowledged by the Ministry of Education. The College enjoys full recognition with the Ministry of Education and is affiliated to the University of Zambia. The College continues to move in line with the government’s efforts to upgrade the professional status of the teacher through upgrading of qualifications.

1.4 Under the Diploma programme, the college offers fourteen (14) key subjects where students have the choice to pursue either a single subject major or double subject teaching major, which are complemented by Educational Studies subjects as compulsory courses for all.

1.5 Upon completion of the programme, students are awarded a Secondary Teachers Diploma from the University of Zambia (UNZA) that enables them to teach grades eight and nine in any school in Zambia. However, the Diploma programme Syllabi are tailored in such a way that the graduates can teach up to grade 12

1.6 The college also runs the Secondary Teachers Diploma as a parallel programme on Distance Learning mode and only come for residential programmes at the college. This Distance Education Programme was introduced in August, 2011 with an initial enrolment of 161 students coming from different parts of the country. This programme enables teachers to upgrade their professional attainments while serving the ministry or other institutions. This programme, like the full time programme, has steadily continued to grow. 

1.7 The College also embarked on the Primary Teacher’s Diploma Course in 2015, which has attracted considerable enrolment from both pre-service and in-service applicants. Plans are already underway to introduce the distance education mode for this programme.

1.8 The College envisages expanding its reach further to consider offering higher qualifications such as degree courses. This is in line with the government’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the provision of health and education services.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

Makeni Islamic Society strives to offer a wholistic curriculum which overally integrates classroom learning with outdoor activities in sports and recreation. To achieve this, the Society has established elaborate playing fields to Rouse different sporting disciplines. Some of the games catered for are football, volleyball, netball and athletics. The institution has also invested in important sports infrastructure such as a basket court and a tennis court.

The three major departments of the Society namely the primary school, high school and TTC follow a vibrant sporting calendar which is programmed to achieve an active population at the institutions. Sports and recreation has strategically helped to portray a very vibrant picture of Makeni Islamic Society through the trips that pupils and students take outside the college as they compete with other institutions of learning.

Sports and recreation is done in conformity with the Islamic ethos which promote good moral conduct by separating the males and females throughout these activities. Sports is regarded very importantly at the institution as it is the major discipline that develops both the mind and the body. Makeni Islamic Society`s philosophy on sports is that physical education enhances pupils and students performance in all areas of their learning. The vision is to train teachers with integrity who will offer a noble service both inside and outside the classroom.
