Chainama College of Health Sciences (CCHS)
CCHS is a public institution under the Ministry of Health, which provides training to various categories of Health workers.


Our Vision: is to be a leading training institution in health care


Mission statement: We are committed to Providing Quality and Competitive Education and Training in Health Sciences to Competently Perform at All Levels of Health Care Delivery.


Chainama College of Health Sciences is one of the largest training institutions for health workers in Zambia, after the University of Zambia (UNZA).  It is located along the Great East Road, approximately 10 Kilometres from the Lusaka city centre.  The institution gained College status in 1984. Over the years, the College has expanded the scope of training programmes offered and significantly increased its capacities and student intakes. The College is affiliated to the University of Zambia. It is a public institution under the Ministry of Health (MoH).
At present it hosts more than 1000 students in pre-service and post-basic programmes.
Currently, we offer the following training programmes:


1.1     Basic Diploma Programmes


The basic diploma programmes are offered in six semesters in three academic years. These are:
a)    Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences General
b)    Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences Psychiatry
c)    Diploma in Environmental Health Sciences
d)    Diploma in Registered Mental Health Nursing
e)    Diploma in Optometry


1.2     Post Basic Diploma Programmes


The post basic diploma programmes are offered in four semesters in two academic years. These include:
a)    Advanced Diploma in General Medicine (phased out/ now  BSc CS)
b)    Advanced Diploma in Clinical Ophthalmology
c)    Advanced Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing
d)    Advanced Diploma in Anaesthesia


1.3     Ordinary Diploma Programmes


a)    Diploma in General Counselling
b)    Diploma in Public Health (classroom and distance modalities)


1.4    Certificate programmes


a)    Certificate in community Health Assistance-HIV Medics


1.5    Bachelor Degree Programmes


a)    Bachelor of Science in Clinical Sciences (UNZA)
1.6    External Programmes hosted at CCHS
a)    Bachelor of Sciences in Professional Health Studies (Teesside University)
b)    Master of Sciences in Public Health Promotion (Leeds Metropolitan University)

Clinical Officer General English language, Mathematics, Biology, Science, any other subject.
Clinical Officer Psychiatry English language, Mathematics, Biology, Science, any other subject.
Environmental Health Technologist English language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics/Chemistry/Physical Science/ Science, any other subject.
Registered Mental Health Nurse English Language, Mathematics, Science and two of the following: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Religious Education, History, Geography 
Optometry Technologist English language, Mathematics, Physics/Science, Biology, any other subject.

Medical Licentiate

(Advanced Diploma)

English language, Mathematics, Biology, Science, any other subject;
Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences General;

Valid practicing certificate from the HPCZ.
Ophthalmic Clinical Officer

English language, Mathematics, Biology, Science, any other subject;
Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences General;

Valid practicing certificate from the HPCZ.
Ophthalmic Nurse

English language, Mathematics, Biology, Science, any other subject
Diploma in Registered Nursing

Valid practicing licence from the GNC
Clinical Officer Anaesthesia

English language, Mathematics, Biology, Physical science, any other subject;
Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences General; and or

Anaesthetic Assistant’s or informal training course in Anaesthesia with a good performance record.

Valid practicing certificate from the HPCZ
Counselling English Language, Mathematics, any three art subjects
Public Health English Language, Mathematics, any three art subjects
Community Health Assistant –HIV Medic English Language, Mathematics, Science, Biology or Chemistry and any other subject
Medical Licentiate (BSc)

English language, Mathematics, Biology, Science, any other subject; and/or
‘A’ levels / Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences General / Advanced Diploma in Medical Sciences;

Valid practicing certificate from the HPCZ
Professional Health Studies Consult College Academic Office
Public Health Promotion

Degree in a relevant subject and relevant professional experience   OR

Relevant professional qualifications and Proficiency in English
CCEHR short courses Grade 12, O levels or Post-graduate (relevant to need)


(i)    Dates for applications are advertised in the local newspapers and the local electronic media
Candidates are required to obtain the application forms at the college from Admissions office
(ii)    Candidates are required to submit completed application forms, attaching certified copies of relevant certificates or result slips
(iii)    All applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of prescribed amount in form of cash or cheque deposited directly into a relevant College Bank Account
(iv)    The closing date for receiving dully completed application forms is as advertised
(v)    Short listed candidates are invited for and attend interviews (both oral and written)
(vi)    Candidates are ranked according to performance in terms of qualifications and interviews
(vii)    The final selection is determined by the available places
(viii)    Selected candidates are notified through acceptance letters.


Applicants should understand that the satisfaction of minimum requirement does not automatically guarantee admission. The College admissions and selection committee is the final authority in the selection of candidates. It comprises all Heads of Department chaired by a designated chairperson on behalf of the College Registrar.


 All candidates are required to obtain the application forms at the College’s Admission office.
Application fee is ZMK 150 for Diploma courses and ZMK 250 for Bachelor courses.
