The institute is located at Chapula in Lufwanyama District and is 14 Km south-west of Kalulushi District.
The Zambia Centre for Horticultural Training (ZCHT) is an in-service training institution providing training in irrigation and horticulture to agriculture extension staff and other personnel in the horticultural sector. The institution is run by a Principal and assisted by a team of dedicated professional, Technical and Administrative staff.

Objective.

To contribute to the increase in overall horticultural production in Zambia that will generate income to help maximize the agricultural sector’s contribution to Gross Domestic Production (GDP) and assure food security at both household and national levels by up-grading the relevant knowledge and skills of the technical, advisory and operational human resource in the agricultural industry through the provision of quality horticultural training.

Courses Offered

Beginners’ Horticultural Course

Intended trainees are horticultural workers and farmers with minimum education of Grade 9 with no agricultural training background.

Course duration : 12 Weeks

Intermediate Horticultural Course
Intended trainees are agricultural extension officers and production supervisors (Managers) who are are holders of a two year certificate in General Agriculture or Equivalent. Non –extension personnel with similar qualifications are also eligible.

Course duration: 16 weeks

Advanced Horticultural Course
Intended for agricultural are agricultural extension officers holding diplomas from Natural Resources and Development College or its equivalent. The course is also open to other personnel with similar qualifications.

Course duration: 20 weeks

Training Methodology
Participants are exposed to classrooms lectures and individual field practical work with excursions to selected areas of horticultural interest. Certificates of achievement in all training activities are given at the end of the course.

Enrolment
Enrolment for Agricultural staff is based on nominations from respective Provinces/Districts. The Centre also considers individual applications from other interested persons.

Training Facilities
The ZHCT has the following facilities in place;

Seminar and classroom facilities

• There is a seminar/class room to seat 40 participants at a time. It is well ventilated and furnished

 

• Library/ Computer facilities ZCHT is in the process of upgrading its library and has introduced computer facilities to service both training and administrative needs.

Social Amenities

Board and Lodging
The Centre has kitchen and dining Hall facilities to provide meals for participants. The student hostel is self-contained with well-maintained shared study rooms, beddings, clean toilets and shower rooms.

Recreation
The student hostel complex has a lounge where participants can relax and watch satellite television. There is also adjacent table tennis room. For outdoor games, participants can participate in keep fit netball, football and volleyball.  A club house exists within the college grounds where assorted beverages and groceries can be purchased/ taken.
